Black Women and Their Fascination With Black Hair Care

Who says that black women can’t grown long hair? Of course you can! Black women can change their hair like the wind changes its direction. Black hair care, black hair styles, these are always a part of your daily regimen as black women.

You’re always looking to see what the celebrities are doing with their hair, when they should be checking you out.

Your creativity and expression on a daily basis will out warp their results any day. Why? Because they really aren’t the ones working on their hair. When you see one of the “celebrities” out and about, you see them as they really are. Hair pulled back, no make-up, nine out of ten times, they’re dressed in something you wouldn’t be caught dead in.

You see, when you step outside of your door, you put forth deliberate effort to look like a “Star”, where as the “Star” looks like a “hag”. You put forth every effort to make sure that your hair is in grand style. Whether it’s your natural black hair, (locs, braids or Afro) Your relaxed hair, your wig or weave, your hair is always at its best.

When you see Michelle Obama, you see a woman of many hair styles. Of course you see a woman who’s taken care of on a daily basis and she’s a wonderful example of how her hair changes to fit the occasion. When she steps out, she gives you an image of what a "Star" is suppose to look like ... classy, elegant and well put together.

But what if you don’t have her entourage? You create your own look!

Have you ever noticed how your hair changes depending on your mood? As African American Women, you can now make that change from straight to natural, curly to kinky. It all depends on what you have in your magic box.

The key to all of these changes is keeping your natural hair and scalp clean, conditioned and moisturized.

Essential Oils For Your Hair

Extracted from the leaves, flowers, roots or branches, essential oils are the pure essence of these plants.

These oils can be used as single oil treatments or you can combine one or two of them into a carrier oil and create a hot oil treatment for yourself.

A hot oil treatment once a week with an essential oil or two would also enhance the condition and beauty of your hair. Oil attracts dust and dirt so make sure that you rinse your hair thoroughly to remove the excess oil. If you feel that you must have oil in your scalp often, massage it with a little oil on your hands. This will enable you to apply just enough to add moisture and take care of any itching and dryness.

You might also add these essential oils to your shampoo and conditioner. Rosemary, Sage, Peppermint and nettle have been known to aid in hair growth. Some of the oils have antibacterial properties that will aid in relieving dry scalp and dandruff.

What I’ve learned in working with women of color and their hair, is you’ll never know what challenges they are experiencing and it’s often that your hair is the recipient of stress and anxiety.

Yes, a lot of the chemicals and glue are responsible for some of your hair stress and anxiety and so are life’s challenges. I’ve also learned that women want what they want, when they want it, weave today, relaxed tomorrow, natural next week and a wig when they’re not quite sure. But if shaving it all off or opting for a wig will help you make it through your day, Go For It!
