As an African American, do you have Anti-Aging dilemmas that need to be solved?  I’d be willing to wage a spinach salad on the fact that you do.

I’d hired a business consultant (a black woman)when I first started my business to coach me through some of the challenges that I was having at the time.  I asked her a simple question, at least I thought it was simple.  The question was, what type of skin care regimen do you use and do you use anti-aging products on your skin?  OK, it was two questions.

I could have sworn that her head turned around twice before it settled back into it’s original place on her neck. I also thought she’d become an Asian dancer the way she rolled her neck and swirled her shoulders …OK … to the point.

Her response was that she only used “soap”(which had her face looking dry and dull) and water and that as a “Black Woman” she didn’t need anti-aging products.  I told her that I respected her choice and left it at that.

As African American’s, we come in an assortment of ebony’s, caramels, mocha’s, vanilla’s …you get the picture.  We are a beautiful people but we do need to understand that just because we have melanin, we still age.  Everybody and everything on the planet ages so why do we think we’re different.

At every age we need to protect our skin.  We are prone to uneven skin tone and dark spots that result from hyperpigmentation.  As early as our 20’s we should begin to take care of our skin in order to delay premature aging.

In our 30’s, it’s a good idea to step up our treatments with topical as well as oral supplements that are high in antioxidants.

In our 40’s, exfoliation becomes key to having and maintaining flawless skin.  Exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cell build up and speeds up cell turnover, giving you a youthful looking complexion.

In our 50’s and up, let’s boost the collagen and elastin by using face firming serums.  Serums are a great way to care for your skin giving it a plump and full appearance.  It’s never to early to start using serums either.

If you’ve read my articles for any period of time, this one will act as a reminder to take care of your skin daily with products that are not harsh and harmful.  If you’re just joining us, our mantra is to cleanse, tone and moisturize twice a day.

Unless your gene pool is exceptional, a Great skin care regimen is going to be the foundation to having beautiful skin.

And as for aging, our black skin may not age as fast as other skin tones, but we do age.  As for caring for your beautiful black skin, treat it with kindness from within and without.
