What is glycerin?

You read the backs of containers and check out the ingredients section and somewhere on this list you will see glycerin.

What is it and how is it used in the products that we find on shelves everyday? Glycerin, also known as glycerol or glycerine, is a sugar alcohol compound, comprising of 3 carbons and 3 hydrophilic hydroxyl groups.

Ok, that's it for the science section today. But if you’ve seen glycerin, it is colorless and odorless. It's sweet tasting and very low in toxicity.

As a food, it is categorized as a carbohydrate. In cosmetics and personal care it is valued for its wide range of humectants and moisturizing properties.

How is Glycerin used?

When found in beauty or personal care products, especially when caring for black skin, glycerin is used as a humectant for lotions, creams and sunscreens.

Glycerin not only locks moisture in your skin by acting as a barrier stabilizer, but it provides superior hydration to your skin.

In foods, it is a non-blood-sugar elevating sweeter and is 60% as sweet as table sugar. It's a thickening agent in liqueurs, syrups, elixirs and pie fillings. In margarine, glycerin is an emulsifier.

It is considered an important component in toothpastes, mouthwashes, skin care products, shaving creams, hair products, glycerin soaps and other soaps, eye shadow, lipstick, lip-gloss and eye drops.

For topical care glycerin is an effective treatment for psoriasis, burns, bites, cuts, rashes, bedsores and calluses. You'll find vegetable kosher glycerin in our Rosewater Toner.

Labeling of Skin Care Products

There's a whole new world in the labeling of products. Keywords like certified organic and organic open up endless possibilities in cosmetics, personal care and the food products that you eat.

In order for a product to make the basic claim of being made with "organic" ingredients, it must have a minimum of 70% organic ingredients. For it to have an "organic seal" on the product it must have a 95% organic content.

A word of caution about Glycerin

Almost all glycerin in the market today is synthetically produced. It is frequently made from contaminated sources. Cooking oils or cheap vegetable oils are the basis of a lot of the glycerin on the market.

How will you know? That's still the $64,000 question. But there are companies that are reputable and produce quality products that are made from organically certified glycerin.
