Up Close and Personal With Your Beautiful Black Skin

When I share information with you, I always write wanting you to get the best of what I know. And today will be no different, but today I’ll talk a bit more from the technical side of your skin (don’t run), hopefully without being boring.

Your skin is the largest organ of your body. When we speak of organs, you probably think of kidney’s, liver, lungs, heart …something that performs a function like keeping your blood flowing or removing waste. Well your skin performs a function, it’s your ultimate wash – n – wear protective barrier from the elements and is nothing short of amazing! It too removes waste.

Just as there are many facets of you and your personality that form the unique person that you are, your skin has its many layers and structures that as a unit, keeps it running smoothly by protecting your other organs.

Your skin varies in thickness. The skin on your eyelids is the thinnest, it’s thinner than a sheet of paper. The skin on the soles of your feet, are the thickest by up to one-fifth of an inch. If you weight between 125-175 pounds, your skin weighs approximately 5 to 8 pounds and stretches 17 to 20 square feet if you were to lay it flat.

That’s a lot of You! But wait, that’s not all. Did you know that each square inch of your skin contains:

• 65 hairs
• 95-100 sebaceous glands (They produce the oil found in your skin)
• 78 yards of nerves
• 19 yards of blood vessels
• 650 sweat glands
• 9,500,000 cells
• 1,300 nerve endings ( they let you know when you’re experiencing pain)
• 19,500 sensory cells at the ends of your nerve fibers
• 78 sensory nerves to detect heat
• 13 sensory nerves to detect cold

*These statistics are from Standard Textbook for Professional Estheticians, Joel Gerson.

Now add the fact that you are fortunate enough to have the greatest gift, that being Melanin as a chemical component of your skin and you just shot to the top of the list. Melanin/melanocytes are what give your beautiful skin its radiant colors … caramel, mocha, fudge and blue black … to name a few.

Since African Americans come in so many beautiful pallets, it’s crucial that your knowledge of your skin and it’s composition will help you in taking great care of it.

Yes, your melanin will protect you from the rays of the sun but common sense must kick in, when you’re out and about. You can burn just like the rest of the family of the planet. Because of your melanin, when you experience scarring, a burn or scrape, your skin will heal with a dark covering.

And now you have what you consider dark spots and uneven skin tone and some of you no longer consider yourself beautiful. On the contrary, You are very beautiful, you’ll just have to work with a professional that understands how to assist you with caring for your skin.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions of the person that you are considering for your skin care needs. If it doesn’t sound right or feel right in your core, you can leave their office.

That’s it for today!!

What's your greatest skin care challenge?

As women and a growing number of men of color, what's your greatest skin care challenge? Whether it's dark spots, uneven skin tone, dark circles, puffiness under your eyes or hair that won't grow, you'll find a product that can possibly become the solution to your challenge.

Moisturizers and ingredients that hydrate your skin will always be your best friend, for your face, body and hair. So look for products with nourishing and nurturing ingredients. Shea butter, cocoa butter, mango butter and jojoba oils are a few of the ingredients to keep on your list.

We've got new additions to our store for you. Essential oils have been known to help calm and soothe skin and scalp irritations. Although you'll find a sample kit on the hair category page, you can use them for any of your skin and hair care needs.

The hair care sample kit has been given an upgrade. We've increased the size of the container on the shampoo and conditioners and added a hair butter sample to the mix.

Although there's beauty in your blackness, your skin is sensitive and needs protection from the sun just like everyone else. So if you know you're challenged by sunburn, add a few drops of Lavender essential oil to Jojoba and Grapeseed Oil and create a nice body oil for yourself. It will bring comfort and beauty back to your skin.

We're listening to you and your suggestions, so keep an eye on the category pages and your emails for updates.
