African American Skin Care: Is It time For A Makeover For You Ageless Beauties?

I've done quite a few articles on Mature Skin and African American Women. Why all the interest you might ask?

What I've noticed is that as you mature, especially those of you over 50, you either give up on wearing make up entirely, wear to much of it or you’re frustrated with the results.

As you mature there are many changes that take place with your face and your skin. As an African American woman your skin will show you everything from discoloration, blotchiness to flawless. Every makeover that deals with your skin will begin with a good product line that's geared to ethnic skin care.

This becomes an amazing opportunity for those of us that are skin care professionals and makeup artist. It allows us to help those of you in this particular age group look and feel your best.

But what if you stopped thinking of the number you now possess "age wise" and deal with how well you feel.

Are you in an age-defying mode? Good for you!

Makeovers don't have to be drastic. Something as simple as a hair cut, adding a little color to your wardrobe or wearing a lip color you’ve never considered before can bring attention to you that you’ve never experienced. It's all good!

A Simple Makeover Using Make up

If your goal is to reflect your natural beauty, an elegant application enhancing your eyes will have heads turning.
  • A makeup primer will smooth out any minor imperfections on your skin as well as help your makeup last longer. For some of you a primer might be all you need.
  • If you have a problem with your eye shadow not lasting a long time, using an eyelid primer might be a good choice, other wise a concealer that will even out your skin tone will be fine.
  • If you want a sheer application, a foundation my not be necessary and using a bronzer will be enough.
  • For whatever reason, a lot of you do not have full eyebrows. You may have cut them off so that you can draw them back on, they've been waxed too thin by the girl at the nail salon or in my case I asked for my eyebrows to be cleaned up and half my brow was gone when I raised up off the table. They are just growing back, that little mishap was in 2007!
And then there are those of you that might be oncology patients and you might have to use the system of re-creating your brows above your eyes. If you do, simply determine what eyebrow color you’d want to start with.

Hold the brow pencil straight up along the side of the nose and where the eyebrow naturally would begin, place a dot there.

Then place dots where the natural arch and end of the brow would be. Stand back, look into a mirror and make sure you have three dots as a reference point. Using short feathering strokes with your pencil re-create your eyebrow following the dots.
  • Applying a bronze or copper shadow to your eyelid gives them a natural elegance.
  • Always look at your natural lip color and shape. For the most flattering natural lip color, never go more than two shades darker than your natural lip color. An invisible lip liner will prevent bleeding of your lipstick or lip-gloss. Use a flesh toned lip pencil to fill in your lip and top it with a beautiful color that compliments your natural color.
