Beauty and Fashion: Power Dressing - African American Style

African American women have always been known to add an element of style the category of dressing.

While gray, black and navy blue suits can be o-so-boring, black women took those colors by the horns and accessorized them into fashion trends that have redefined what fashion is to the world.

A colorful scarf, a bold shawl, a colorful broach, have all adorned and added color to the traditional uniform of dark office suits.

While you will read in publications such as the Wall Street Journal about Career women adding bold colors to their suits, African American women did this years ago. I know I was one of them.

There was nothing more boring than looking like a clone with no self-expression, so I'd always have a colorful shawl or scarf. They later became my signature pieces. For me it was shawls and scarves, for others it was jewelry.

In another career I was an Image Consultant (still am to a certain degree) and for some of my clients at the time, their signature piece was their lingerie. You couldn't see it but the silk teddies and tap pants or slips were an inner expression that allowed them to move and feel feminine in tailored suits.

Even though pantyhose were a big part of leg attire, I'd suggest garter belts and hosiery. This gave them an even more feminine feel.

Texture and Color in African American Style

African American women are the Queen of blending texture and colors and this takes a certain amount of confidence to carry them off. The key is in being able to wear these textures and colors without distracting the person you’re speaking with. After all, in your work environment, you still want your professional voice to be heard more than you’re seen.

Bottom line, don't allow the outfit to out speak your message at that corporate presentation. While self-expression and new elements in style can offer you new colors and provide you with figure conscious details, it should also bring balance to your femininity and authority within your work environment.

Comfort and professionalism are your objective. There's no longer a need for broad shoulders with a military flair. There was a time when dresses were not a part of what was considered "Proper" attire. Now you can wear a "Dress" and when topped with a soft and flowing or semi tailored jacket, you're professionally dressed in your Power Style.

Remember, there's still a fine line between showing T&A and commanding respect. Power dress with style and grace and leave the T&A for after work activities.
