Black Hair Care -Relaxed or Natural? That is the Question.

You've been debating for a while now whether to keep treating your beautiful African American hair with harsh chemicals to keep it straight and easier to style, or to go all natural and embrace the heritage that gave you the curls.

It's a tough decision, and you've got to make this one on your own. Before you jump, it's best to know both sides of the coin.

It Takes Time

Yes, like all things, going natural takes time. It's going to take at least a year for your chemically-treated hair to grow out and for your natural hair texture to show underneath it all.

If you don't think you have the time or desire to go through a lengthy transition phase, maybe going natural isn't for you.

If you decide that you want to give it a go, the best thing to do is to keep close contact with your Black Hair Care specialist to make the transition easier. She'll keep your hair trimmed regularly and find a style that will be most flattering to the shape of your face and the texture of your natural hair at each stage of the transition process.

Natural Black Hair Care Products

When shopping for natural hair care products, it's best not to go by the color of your hair, but by the texture. Believe it or not, African American hair has many different textures.

You could have tight, kinky curls, more relaxed kinks, frizzy, corkscrew, curly, or wavy hair. It could also tend to be coarse, dry, or oily. It's best to read the label and use a natural black hair care product that is specially formulated for your hair type.

Having said that, don't pigeonhole yourself either. If one black hair care product doesn't work the way you expect, try another.

Unlike Caucasian, Asian, or Latino hair, African American hair tends to look more dull. Why is this? First of all, because other hair types tend to be more straight, light is able to reflect off the natural oils in the hair.

Because curly hair is ... well, curly ... it takes longer for the oils in your scalp to travel down the hair shaft to coat the individual strands of hair. This makes your hair look less shiny.

If you want that lustrous sheen on your hair on a daily basis, you might want to consider straightening it. Heat is a great way to straighten - but it also damages your hair, and it only lasts until the next time you wash your hair.

If you want a more "permanent" shiny look, chemical treatments might be the way to go. Again, you will be damaging your hair. Even if it looks shiny, it's not healthy. There are some black hair care products available that will help reduce the amount of damage done to your hair when you opt to relax the curls.

Look for natural hair care products that have jojoba oil, coconut oil, almond oil or olive oil in them. Stay away from petroleum-based oils because these do not moisturize. Instead they act as a sealant. Sealants are great if you already moisturized and want to lock moisture in - but keep in mind that sealants act both ways - they also keep moisture out.
