Black Skin Care Products and The Ingredients Found In Them

You are inundated with advertisements all the time about the next “miracle” product. Whether you’re the average consumer, a skin care professional or a physician yourself, you all like the idea of having flawless skin.

No two of you have the same skin type or perform the same skin care regimen and guess what? Skin care is not an exact science.

But what you do have in common is how your skin reacts to the ingredients, active or inactive, in the skin care products that you use.

Yes, there will be a reaction but what you hope for is a positive reaction to your product choice. For you as an African American, you'll definitely want to make sure that your product choice will work for you.

You see advertisements that say: 'all new botanical' or 'make your skin flawless'. What are the ingredients found in these products that say ‘all new botanical’ or ‘make your skin flawless’?

Let's take a look at some of the active ingredients found in the ingredients you purchase.

L-ascorbic acid – This is an antioxidant that helps fight off free radicals produced by UV rays. It helps promote collagen synthesis and has skin-brightening properties.

Glycolic Acid - This is an alpha hydroxy acid that’s known for its exfoliating properties. Glycolic acid helps strengthen collagen and increase cell renewal.

Salicylic Acid – This ingredient helps break down blackheads as well as dissolve dead skin cells.

Hyaluronic Acid – This ingredient delivers moisture to dehydrated skin. It also provides a healthy environment for new cell growth.

Resveratrol – Resveratrol is a potent antioxidant found in the skin of grapes. It helps to preserve the structure and function of your skin.

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) – This active ingredient is derived from green tea. It is a powerful antioxidant and is anti-inflammatory. It is often used with other antioxidants as well as in products used to treat acne.

Active/Inactive Ingredients

There are two main groups of ingredients in the formulation of cosmetics – active and inactive.

Active ingredients are added to a product to carry out an action. For instance, retinol may be added to a product to increase cellular turnover.

Inactive ingredients are included in a product to help deliver the active ingredients, as well as preserve the products and make them aesthetically pleasing. Inactive ingredients include things like fragrances, thickeners and coloring agents.

They also make a product effective. The formulation of a product must be done correctly or it could be potentially harmful to your skin and health.

Finally ...

The function of your beautiful black skin is to protect your internal organs and keep it free of potentially harmful bacteria.

The ingredients found in products that are used on your skin are a part of this protective barrier.
