Caring for African American Skin with "Real" Natural Products

In and around almost every home you will find a number of ingredients that can be used to create an effective natural skin care product for your beautiful black skin.

Once you've drunk that bottle of red wine and thanked the grape for the resveratrol, known for its anti-aging benefits, you can use the bottles to create an indoor herb garden.

If you check the contents of your fridge, you'll find items like milk or yogurt. In your pantry there's probably honey and olive, coconut, grape-seed, jojoba or peanut oil.

Did you know that you can use milk in your bath? It's even better if you can get it straight from the cow, not having been processed. Yogurt cools and soothes sunburn and minor skin irritations.

Raw natural honey is the greatest hydrator of skin.

Base oils are the beginning ingredients in most moisturizers. Essential oils are so strong in their strength that they must be diluted before you can apply them to your body.

Here's a list of some base oils:

Avocado oil is good for very dry skin. It contains vitamins A and B and only needs to be used in small amounts.

Grape-seed is high in polyunsaturates, soothing for sensitive and mature skin.

Jojoba Oil is actually a liquid wax that dries quickly upon exposure to air. As a wax bead, jojoba makes a great exfoliate.

Coconut oil is a very fatty oil that solidifies at room temperature. It will melt at the slightest increase in temperature though. Coconut oil absorbs quickly into your skin and makes a light-textured cream or ointment when blended with other ingredients.

Olive oil is great for dry skin and I've been told by some of you that it works better for 'you' when sunbathing than some sunscreens.

Peanut oil is good for oily skin.

Natural Skin Care Ingredients from The Garden

Some of your most common skin care ingredients grown come up from the soil in your yard. Dandelions are the perfect example.

Don't have a piece of land that you can grow your herbs in? There's always a pot that you can use.

Pot gardens have become the trend in Urban gardening. Rooftops, window seals, vacant lots and fire escapes are the new garden environments. Glass jars that hang from your ceiling is the latest trend in gardening.

All this means is that you can pull an herb or flower at any time and create an oil, masque or bath salt blend that will be natural and perfect for your skin.

Not all of you, but some of you like the idea of getting your hands dirty or experimenting and working with your creative side. It can be very therapeutic. Shoot me an email and let me know what creations you’ve been given.
