Caring For Black Skin - Professional Facials

What does getting a professional facial mean to you?

Getting a facial means different things to different people. For some of you it's a treatment to maintain your existing healthy skin. For others it's a necessary step for keeping your beautiful black skin free from challenges like breakouts.

Everyone can benefit from a good facial no matter what condition your skin is in. Facials will help in getting rid of imbedded debris such as black heads and help in deep cleansing your pores.

Here are four treatments that should be part of a facial.
  • Deep cleansing - Every facial begins with what you might consider a washing or cleansing. Then it will be analyzed to determine what treatment should be given. Extractions are part of deep cleansing. This is where blackheads and whiteheads are removed. Typically a clay mask would be done to further cleanse your pores.

  • Exfoliation - This is the treatment that would remove the outer dead cells. After an exfoliation treatment your skin is typically smoother and more refined.

  • Hydration - Moisturizing and nourishing creams are constantly massaged into your skin during a facial. All skin types can benefit from deep hydration, even oily skin.

  • Relaxation - When I talk with a lot of you, your thought process is typically that of relaxation when you get a facial. This, for some of you is one of the only times that you can go behind closed doors and have all attention focused on you. We all have a lot of stress in our lives and anything that can help in having an anti-stress moment is crucial. Many people are actually surprised in how relaxing facials really are.

How often should you have a facial?

Once a month is the golden rule and recommendation. Did you know that every 28 days, more if you are a mature one, your skin cells regenerate?

New cells come to the surface pushing older cells to the point of shedding. When you have a facial at least once a month, you are supplying increased blood circulation to your skin. A facial enhances the natural life, death and the removal of your skin cells.

If you can have a facial once every two weeks, this would be even more beneficial to your skin.

If you've got problematic skin, having a facial more often will help your skin on the road to recovery.

The importance of a professional treatment cannot be overemphasized but this does not mean that you should negate your daily at-home regimen. Professional facials are to work hand in hand with your at-home regimen.

If you have to make a choice, spend your money on products that will enhance a good at-home regimen and schedule a professional facial once a month instead of twice a month.

Finally ...

Getting a professional facial involves two things. First, you will need to find a qualified esthetician that understands melanin and the sensitivities of Black Skin. Secondly, a good quality product that's good for African American Skin is crucial.
