Spa Parties and Black Women, What a Great Combination!

There's nothing like a gathering with a room full of women who have one thing in common, and that’s their beautiful black skin. I often have the honor and privilege of being the guest for spa parties amongst women of color.

At these particular gatherings, it's important to understand that, even though they’ve come together typically as a way of relaxing, winding down, catching up on the latest news during these particular events, it's their private time.

The most recent gathering took place at a young lady's house and she invited friends and family in on a Saturday afternoon. Speaking with them is always enlightening.

One of the things that were gathered from this particular event was that all of these women sat and talked about how beautiful they think their black skin is.

No Bleaching or Lightening Products For Beautiful Black Skin

They were adamant about how they don't want to bleach or lighten their skin. They have no issues, with their complexions and these were beautiful women.

In general, African American women are beautiful, but we've been trained in such a way that media, radio and videos have us to think that unless we are "light, bright and darn near white", hair like corn silk, that we are not a beautiful woman.

So it was refreshing to hear them express how they loved their blackness and love the blackness of their beauty and their skin.

Black Skin Care: Facials, Great Food and Time To Release

The facial was one of the services provided and I'll say one of, even though technically it was the only service that was paid for, that was provided.

Other services such as the opportunity to sit down and converse were phenomenal.

You'd have to pay a therapist hundreds of dollars an hour just to be able to sit down and converse. And to have the feedback that was exchanged among the women, that in it self was worth everything.

And then you had the meal that was prepared. The one thing we have a tendency to overlook is when it comes to caring for black skin is the food we eat. Food is critical.

It's important for all skin, but with African American skin, when you get into the arena of your skin showing and telling you what your problems are, the food that you eat is going to teach you a lesson.

When you take a look at how these women came together, foods like steamed zucchini and yellow squash, flat pasta with cherry tomatoes cut in half and sautéed garlic seasoned in olive oil.

They chose to have grilled and baked chicken wings and spinach salad. It was a beautiful spread of food and the one element they had, that's typically overlooked is water.

They understood that for every glass of alcohol or juice they drank, they drank 2 glasses of water right behind it to cleanse their pallet.

Your Basic Black Skin Care Regimen

It was refreshing to see that they were open to the service being offered as far as the facials were concerned.

In your basic black skin care regimen you will have the cleansing, toning and moisturizing process. With that, a mask was added, a facial serum and an exfoliating procedure, the Jojoba Facial Scrub.

I love doing spa parties for my ladies because it puts us in an environment where they're not rushed.

It was a very relaxing environment where I could take my time and converse with the women about their skin individually and allow them to ask questions and get feedback on the spot.

It was not the typical business turnover of, herd them in and herd them out. Don't get me wrong, I get paid for what I do, but the spa party approach allowed all of us to have an exchange of knowledge and information about their skin, nutrition and reducing stress in their lives.
